SIR Ravindra Jadeja |
Ravindra Jadeja has climbed to a career-best fourth position on the world rankings for one-day bowlers after a stretch of impressive performances, including a five wicket haul against the West Indies in the ongoing Champions Trophy.
The 24-year-old is cementing himself as India’s leading all-rounder, capable with both the bat and ball. His slow left-arm action doesn’t deliver the most mesmerizing spin bowling, but it has been effective, as last week’s match against the West Indies proved. Jadeja is ranked fourth on the all-rounder rankings as well.
He is also a big character of the Indian team, jokingly referred to as “Sir,” even by the captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who is also his Chennai Super Kings teammate in the Indian Premier League.
Jadeja has taken nine wickets in India’s three victories at the Champions Trophy so far, where he sits second on the wicket-taking rankings behind New Zealand’s Mitchell McClenaghan, who has 11. He’ll have the Kiwi’s total in his sights though, given that New Zealand has been eliminated.
India plays Sri Lanka in the second semi-final on Thursday, in Cardiff. The first semi-final is England against South Africa in London.
India’s unbeaten run in the Champions Trophy has helped it strengthen its position as the top One-Day International team, the International Cricket Council said in a statement accompanying the latest Reliance-rankings, which were compiled after the group stage of the tournament.
Other Indians climbing the rankings include Suresh Raina, who has gained one position to 14th on the ODI batting rankings, while Rohit Sharma jumped 11 places to 47th. His opening batting partner Shikhar Dhawan, the top-scorer at the Champions Trophy with 264 runs, is 50th on the list.
